Why Women Over 40 Need More Protein

If there's one habit that can completely change how you feel in your 40s and beyond, it might not be another supplement or a stricter diet it could be something much simpler: eating enough protein.

For years, women were told to eat less.

Less fat.
Less carbs.
Less calories.

But somewhere along the way, we forgot to ask a more important question:

Are we eating enough to build a strong, healthy body?

Midlife isn't about becoming smaller.

It's about becoming stronger.

As estrogen begins to fluctuate during perimenopause, our bodies naturally become less efficient at maintaining muscle. That matters because muscle isn't just about looking toned it's one of the biggest predictors of healthy aging. It supports your metabolism, protects your bones, improves balance, and helps you stay independent as you get older.

That's why I think of protein as one of the most powerful tools for thriving in midlife. Not because it's trendy, but because it gives your body the building blocks it needs to repair, recover, and stay strong.

Why Muscle Is Your Best Investment After 40

Starting in our 30s, we naturally begin losing muscle mass. After menopause, that process can speed up if we aren't intentional about strength training and nutrition.

Less muscle often means:

✔ A slower metabolism

✔ More difficulty maintaining a healthy weight

✔ Lower energy

✔ Increased risk of falls and fractures

✔ Less strength for everyday life

The good news?

Muscle is incredibly responsive to the right lifestyle habits even in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.

Protein provides the amino acids your muscles need to repair after exercise and preserve lean body mass. Combined with regular resistance training, it becomes one of the most effective ways to support a healthy metabolism.

🎯 Next Step: Build the Muscle You're Feeding

Eating enough protein is only half of the equation. Strength training tells your body where to use it.

Protein Helps More Than Your Muscles

Most women think protein is only important if they're trying to build muscle.

In reality, it supports almost every system in your body.

A protein-rich meal helps keep blood sugar steadier, which can improve energy levels and help you feel satisfied longer. Many women also find that eating enough protein throughout the day makes it easier to avoid the afternoon energy crash and constant snacking.

Protein also supports hormone production, immune function, and tissue repair things that become increasingly important during perimenopause.

If you've been feeling exhausted, struggling with cravings, or waking up at 3 a.m., nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle, but it's an important one.

🎯 Feeling Tired All the Time?

Fatigue isn't always about needing more caffeine.

Sometimes it's about giving your body the nutrition, sleep, and recovery it actually needs.

Protein Supports Healthy Aging From the Inside Out

When people think about aging well, they often focus on skincare.

But healthy skin starts long before your moisturizer.

Protein provides the amino acids needed to produce collagen, repair tissues, and support healthy hair, skin, nails, and connective tissue.

While collagen supplements can be helpful, they should never replace eating enough high-quality protein throughout the day.

Think of protein as the foundation and everything else builds on top of it.

Healthy aging isn't about chasing perfection.

It's about building a body that's strong enough to enjoy life for decades to come.

🎯 Wondering If Hormones Play a Role?

Nutrition is powerful, but sometimes lifestyle alone isn't the entire answer.

For some women, hormone therapy may also be part of the conversation.

The Midlife Protein Mistakes I See Most Often

❌ Waiting until dinner to eat most of your protein.

❌ Believing protein is only for bodybuilders.

❌ Skipping breakfast and relying on coffee until noon.

❌ Focusing only on calories instead of muscle.

❌ Assuming it's "too late" to build strength after 40.

The truth?

Your body is capable of remarkable change at any age when you consistently give it what it needs.

How Much Protein Do Women Over 40 Need?

While everyone's needs are different, many experts recommend aiming for approximately 1.2–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day for active midlife adults. If you regularly strength train or are trying to preserve muscle during perimenopause, your needs may be toward the higher end of that range.

A simple strategy is to aim for 25–35 grams of protein at each meal instead of trying to eat most of it at dinner.

Some excellent protein choices include:

✔ Greek yogurt

✔ Eggs

✔ Chicken or turkey

✔ Salmon and other fish

✔ Cottage cheese

✔ Tofu, edamame, or tempeh

✔ Lean beef

✔ Lentils and beans

✔ A high-quality whey or plant-based protein powder when needed

Remember, consistency matters more than perfection.
